THE CHURCHES OF VIRGINIA

Photography by John DeMajo

CHAPEL OF FORMER WESTERN STATE HOSPITAL Staunton, VA.

The former location of Virginia's Western State Mental Hospital, has been repurposed as a condominium development. The former chapel has been included in the Churches Of Virginia web site because it houses the remains of one of Virginia's oldest pipe organs. The organ has been abandoned-in-place for many years, and its present condition, as evidenced by the photos displayed below, is poor. The chapel is located in what was a service building for the hospital, and later for a state prison which occupied the complex. The service building contained the hospital/prison kitchen, laundry, and the chapel which was located on an upper floor. At the time of our visit, there were plans by the developer to restore the service building, however, there were no immediate plans in place for the building or the organ at that time.
