THE CHURCHES OF VIRGINIA

SAINT PETER'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Port Royal, Virginia

The present church building was constructed in 1836. About 20 years of planning and saving went into the construction of St. Peter's. The building survived the Civil War as well as a fire in 1849. In 1868, lightning struck the bell tower, which resulted in the construction of the wooden bell tower that still stands beside the building. In recent years, the ceiling was badly damaged and had to be replaced.
