ORGAN HISTORY FOR GRACE (STREET) BAPTIST CHURCH (submitted by Richmond AGO chapter historian Donald Traser) |
This church was originally located on Grace Street. The original name was Grace Street Baptist Church, however, the "Street" was dropped when they moved to their present location in 1949. While still on Grace Street, there were 2 Hook & Hastings organs (the second might actually have been Hook-Hastings). The first burned in a fire when it was only 2 years old. Its replacement was in the new church and used for 21 years before the church was demolished. That organ was then moved to Sharon B-word Church on Leigh Street. The façade is still there. The Austin was in a building at Grove Avenue & the Boulevard, catty-corner from Va. Museum of Fine Arts. It was destroyed in a 1946 fire. The present church had a Hammond in the current building until the first Allen Electronic organ was installed approximately 30 years ago. . |
